Born in Brookfield, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1825, Mary Jane Hawes was encouraged by her parents in gaining an education and in her early attempts at writing. She began teaching in district schools at thirteen, and two years later her first published work appeared. In August 1849 she married Daniel Holmes, a Yale graduate with whom she lived and taught school in or near Versailles, Kentucky, for three years. From 1852 they lived in Brockport, New York. In 1854, the year after Daniel Holmes╒s admission to the bar, Mary Holmes published her first novel, Tempest and Sunshine; or, Life in Kentucky.
Nearly two score novels and collections of stories followed, all cut from the same pattern of conventional domestic tales embodying the simplest of moral codes, in which only black and white were admitted, and all written in sentimental and undistinguished prose. They included English Orphans, 1855, The Homestead on the Hillside, and Other Tales, 1856, Lena Rivers, her best known book, 1856, Meadow Brook, 1857, Dora Deane; or the East India Uncle, 1858, Cousin Maude, 1860, Marian Gray, 1863, Darkness and Daylight, 1864, Hugh Worthington, 1865, The Cameron Pride: or, Purified by Suffering, 1867, Rose Mather, 1868, Ethelyn╒s Mistake, 1869, Millbank, 1971, Edna Browning, 1872, West Lawn, 1874, Edith Lyle, 1876, Daisy Thornton, 1878, Forrest House, 1879, Chateau d╒Or, 1880, Madeline, 1881, Queenie Hetherton, 1883, Bessie╒s Fortune, 1885, Gretchen, 1887, Marguerite, 1890, Paul Ralston, 1897, The Tracy Diamonds, 1899, The Merivale Banks, 1903, Rena╒s Experiment, 1904, and Connie╒s Mistake, 1905. Her vast appeal to young girls and women enabled her publishers to sell upward of 2 million copies of her books, many in paperbound editions. She died in Brockport, New York, on October 6, 1907.
